Border poll methodology

The Cronkite News-Univision News-Dallas Morning News poll was conducted by Baselice & Associates, Inc., a survey research firm that also polled residents along the border in 2001, just months before the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The methodology in both polls was similar, said Mike Baselice, president of the Austin-based firm. The latest poll surveyed 1,427 people on both sides of the border in May 2016. In total, 14 U.S. and Mexican cities were polled.

In Mexico, half of the interviews were conducted face-to-face and half done over the telephone. In the U.S., all the interviews were conducted by telephone. In Mexico, all the interviews were conducted in Spanish; 73 percent of the interviews in the U.S. were in Spanish and 27 percent in English. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

“While people in Mexico and the United States have opinions about the border, this unique survey explores the opinions of people who live along that border,” said Baselice, adding, “we have the benefit of having asked several of the questions in this survey fifteen years ago. Therefore, this survey tracks similarities and differences along with the responses to new questions.”
