PHOENIX – The last time Arizona State fans saw Cam Skattebo, he was wheeling around on a scooter at the Territorial Cup game in November.
On Sunday, he was jogging around a baseball diamond.
If his mobility is any indication, Skattebo should be ready for New York Giants training camp in July.
During his rookie season, Skattebo’s hard-nosed style of football injected life into a Giants fan base. He had 410 rushing yards and seven touchdowns from scrimmage in eight games before a season-ending ankle injury. He had surgery to repair the dislocated ankle the day the injury occurred in late October.
Skattebo said his ankle feels good.
“I’m a couple months out of surgery now, and it’s (not worth) dwelling on, and we got to look past it and realize I’m getting healthy,” Skattebo said.
Fans were happy to see him, and he was greeted with fanfare everywhere he went in Tempe.
He sat courtside at the ASU-Arizona basketball game Saturday alongside football coach Kenny Dillingham and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. He also met up with athletic director Graham Rossini and Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden before the game.
“This is home for me,” Skattebo said. “It’s somewhere I’m going to always come back to. I’m going to live here until I’m hopefully 80 years old.”
The next day, Skattebo hit a home run and a double in the Sun Devil Baseball Alumni/Celebrity Softball Game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. He added a picturesque bat flip to boot, in true Skattebo fashion.
“Baseball was something I loved doing and I almost wanted to play it more than football, but football ended up working out,” Skattebo said.
Football worked out and then some.
Skattebo rushed for 4,386 yards in his college career – 2,494 of those coming in two years at ASU. During his senior year, Skattebo rushed for 1,711 yards and added 605 receiving yards to go along with 24 touchdowns. He finished fifth in the 2024 Heisman voting and was known as the ultimate Swiss Army knife during his time at ASU.
He threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to ignite the ASU comeback in the 2025 Peach Bowl against Texas. He added a long reception and scored the game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion on the next drive. His Peach Bowl stat line sounds straight out of a Disney movie.
During the 2023 season, Skattebo attempted 15 passes, made a solo tackle and punted the ball eight times. Skattebo was named a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award in 2023, which is awarded to the most versatile and high level player in college football.
Sun Devils baseball alum and current Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson was also in town and had some high praise for Skattebo.
“He’s an unbelievable athlete, but he’s an unbelievable person, too,” Torkelson said. “It was actually my first time meeting him and he’s a baller. He’s a special dude.”
