This image from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department body-camera video shows Roy Scott, 65, outside his apartment complex in Las Vegas on March 3, 2019, moments after he tells police officers that he is a paranoid schizophrenic. Scott is one of at least 12 people who died in Nevada from 2012 through 2021 during or shortly after encounters with police that did not involve a gun, an investigation by The Associated Press and the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at Arizona State University found. In 2019, Roy Scott called 911 to report a break-in, but when Las Vegas police showed up, events snowballed into a physical confrontation, despite Scott telling officers he had paranoid schizophrenia.
