Tribal members built this monument located on the former site of the Tekakwitha Orphanage on the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Reservation in South Dakota. The orphanage was closed roughly 30 years ago, but for decades children were separated from their families and brought here. Despite decades of progress since Native Americans gained the right to vote, some decisions by county officials continue to make it more difficult for people who live on reservations to cast ballots.
